Making your own soy candles, Continued.

Fragrance Oils:
This is where most new Candle makers make their biggest mistake. They don't add enough fragrance oil. I'm not going to get into all the math and percentages here. ( that's why I suggested you use 1 pound of Soy Wax to start off with) Just figure on using
1.5 oz. wt. per 1 pound of Soy Wax. Notice I mention by weight and not by volume. This is because all fragrances do not weigh the same. Adding too much fragrance oil is just as bad as not enough. Overloading your Soy Wax will cause undesirable results. Once again, you can find fragrance oils cheaper on-line than at the hobby stores. The more you buy, the cheaper it is.
Color Dye:
If you decide to add color to your Soy Candle, you have a couple of choices. Liquid or solid (blocks) The choice is totally up to
you. It's not that critical for your hobby. You probably should buy this at your local hobby store because you can get smaller
amounts. You don't need too much dye to color your Soy Candle.
Thermometer:
You'll definitely need a thermometer. You can pick up a cheap one at the hobby store in the same section you get your wicks and
color dye. You can buy a better, digital one down the road for about $30.00 if you decide to make more Soy Candles.
Double boiler:
Some people will tell you that you can melt your Soy Wax in your microwave, and they're right. Soy Wax melts at a much lower
temperature than pariffin wax so you can melt it in the microwave, but we suggest you use a double boiler. (you cannot melt it in a
pan directly on the stove. It will burn.) It doesn't have to be fancy, you can use an old sauce pan filled half way with water. Then
buy a tall pot for melting your Soy Wax. You can get this from your hobby store for under $15.00. Put your Soy Wax into your
melting pot, the melting pot into the sauce pan filled halfway with water, and you have yourself a double boiler.
